Leeds Millennium Square

The Square provides a new heart for the city centre. The site includes areas for staged performances such as plays, pop concerts, operatic and orchestral performances, as well as civic ceremonies and street entertainment.

The Square's design incorporates three squares within one - the main central square, another to the north of the square by the Leeds Institute and a new garden (the Mandela Gardens) to the south, including a contemporary water feature. The surface of the Square is constructed in limestone and York stone paving.

A green granite stone strip was laid through the paving across the square to highlight the route for partially sighted people between the Civic Hall and the pedestrian crossing on Great George Street. Visual and tactile warnings between the Square and Cookridge Street were also incorporated into the design.
